The terrific image is a local showroom that connects artists to consumers. The showroom specializes in handcrafted art that displays images. The arts include paintings, drawings, and photos. Founded in the year 2016, the showroom has had tremendous success in showcasing what the local artists are capable of, while at the same time making them earn an income from their ventures.
The idea of the business came up while I realized one of my friends was a good painter. The friend, however, lacked a way of showcasing his paintings, thus not benefiting from the venture. I started organizing events on weekends at random places and have him and other painters come to showcase their art and earn a percentage off the sales. More artists joined us, and it became increasingly difficult to host all of them at the same place and in a short period of time. This prompted me to find a place to permanently set up the business. That is how we opened up the showroom.
Since its opening, the business has attracted thousands of artists who have had their art sold to customers who loved them. The business’s vision is “to help touch people’s hearts through art. While our mission is “to work closely with artists to the satisfaction of both the artists and their customers.”
Based on the vision, we let our artists represent their true feelings, emotions, and ideas through their pieces. We believe that for every type of emotion felt by a person, the same is shared by many others. Therefore, our biggest concern has been to make sure that the artist, the employees at the showroom, and the customers are fully satisfied. Our work so far has been excellent and has reflected on the business’s revenues, which have been in a steady increase of 10% annually.
Our best-selling point is the uniqueness of our services. Our employees at the showroom understand the need to engage with the customers well to give them an excellent customer experience. We also make it our business to offer customers personalized experiences. A customer might request to have a piece done for them. To increase the connection between the customer and the art, we make it possible for the customer to have a one-on-one meeting with an artist of their choosing. W also organize events that help connect customers and artist on a personal level to help them connect with the emotions.
The company’s most significant resource is our artists and employees. We employ high talent at our company. The employees are made to understand their importance in the success of the business and the crucial role they play in its success. The artists, on the other hand, are made to feel like part of the company. They participate in the decision making of every decision about their art. In most case, the art displayed in the showroom is that which have been made by the artists’ expressions, rather than those made at the request of the customers. This move guarantees that the artists would be fully satisfied, and that is at the core of our organizational culture.
Due to the massive success of the business, there has been an increased number of businesses opened in our locality. The businesses have brought more competition, which the company values. The company is also experiencing tremendous growth attributed to an increased customer base. There has also been an increase in the number of artists willing to work with us. Some of these artists are not from the local community, thus making it hard to have their art displayed in the showroom due to the inconveniences of distance. For these reasons, the company has had to think of expanding our business, thus a change in business structure. Due to the need to reach a bigger audience, the company wants to move from a brick-and-motor business to an E-Business.
The business has been operating for the past four years. Before having an elaborate business plan, it is crucial we do an investigation to determine where we are and what are the opportunities that lie ahead. In this section, we are going to conduct a SWOT analysis to look at the business’s internal strengths and weaknesses as well as the externa, threats, and opportunities.
As a means of adapting to the new operations, the business will adopt a new structure. In the early stages, most decisions will be centralized. The headquarters of the services would be at the current location of the business. Decisions made by the management would be highly dependent on the information collected throughout the facilities. The information will inform our packaging, marketing, and customer interactions. To continue with the one-on-one interactions with customers, the headquarters will serve as a place where customers would come and interact with the artists. This trend will also be replicated in different locations as the business expands.
The business will have top management consisting of a C.E.O who will be working in close relations with the heads of departments. The Chief Executive Officer’s role will be to monitor the day to day activities of the company. His/her position would be to make sure that the company’s culture is integrated into every department. The company’s pledge is still the same “to work closely with artists to the satisfaction of both the artists and their customers.” therefore, the artists are always the focal point of our business. Their satisfaction is of the utmost priority, and there should not be any compromises. The reason for the expansion is primarily because of the need to reach as many artists as possible while at the same time, increase their customer reach. The C.E.O will ensure that every employee understands that the company is more of a community. Every member is expected to complement each other and not pull anyone down.
Since the company would be expanding, there has to be a guaranteed supply of art. Therefore, there will be the creation of a department that manages artists. This department will be the focal department because art is the first product of the company. The company will also a research and development department. This department will be majorly comprised of the information systems experts. Their biggest role would be to collect as much information needed to inform some critical decisions taken by the managers. The department will also host the marketers. By working together with the Information Systems experts, the marketers will know how to package the image of the company.
In this structure, every department is expected to complement each other rather than just exist as a formality. Every department would be expected to have a plan that aligns it with the goals and strategies of the company. For example, instead of the HR department only working as an oversight department, it would be expected of them to review the company’s policies and come up with the best recruiting criteria. The department will also conduct annual reviews to determine to what extent they have contributed to the company’s success.
Adoption of technology
Technology is at the center of the expansion. With an online presence, the company will have a wider reach than it currently has. Therefore, having the best facilities would help us achieve our business goals. The company will strive to have the best talent in the department. Their efforts will be primarily to facilitate the connection between customers and artists. The systems will be developed in a manner that helps the customer have interactions as they would have at any of our physical outlets. The company believes that when the artists interact with the customers on a personal level, the customer can share the emotions and feelings expressed in the art, which is at the core of our business.
Other than facilitation, the systems will be recording every customer-artist activity. This data will be helpful when looking for patterns, trends, and relationships (Baltzan, 2019). The information collected will inform be analyzed. Some of the questions that would be answered by the analysis include:
These are some of the crucial questions that would inform most of the company’s decisions. This information will inform the HR department on how to conduct recruitments, the marketing department on how to market the company, and the top management on the company’s priorities, among many other decisions.
Challenges due to technology.
The use of the internet to make purchases comes with its challenges. Despite the enormous benefits, this business model has an equal measure of difficulties. It is, therefore, crucial to highlight them so as to be prepared.
Lack of privacy: Weak systems that are unable to provide protection to customer’s phone numbers, emails, credit cards, and other private information (Bhalla, 2019). In such a weak system, it is easy for hackers to breach and have access to individual customer information.
Web Spoofing: This is when an attacker sets a website that resembles an original one with only an insignificant difference, say the use of 0 instead of o (Abidin, 2011). These sites easily defraud customers, thus destroying the reputation of the original business.
Tax-related problems: Most online businesses have a problem calculating their taxes. This leads them to clash with government authorities and might threaten the clod=sure of their business (Bhalla, 2019).
Poor customer service: In an online business, there lacks the presence of a physical store. In most cases, customer needs are always ignored by some companies. For example, a customer would want to return a damaged product or one that did not satisfy them. A business may refuse to offer them a way to do that, which frustrates the customer (Petersen, 2019).
As our business shifts from a brick-and-motor model online, we have to consider the security of our customers, artists, and the business itself. There are two levels of security in an E-Business. Th first one is confidentiality; the guarantee that it’s only the authorized personnel that would have access to private information, and integrity; the assurance that data does not change from the customer to the retailer (Hussain, 2013).
Solutions to the challenges
Hackers are the biggest threat to online security. Their main aim is to access private information and use it for their own personal gain. Therefore, businesses like ours have to develop strong security solutions to minimize the chances of hackers having access to this information. Some of the existing solutions are as follows:
Th use of updated security software. The information systems department will have to make sure they have installed firewalls and antimalware software that help secure the systems and remove any unwanted software. All systems’ operating systems and other software must be up to date (Alisson, n.d.). The company will employ top talent to make sure they can develop secure systems for the company too.
Backup. There will be a backup option for every company data. The reserve will be both on-site and offsite. Data backups will be conducted once per week to ensure that critical data is not lost for any reason (Martin, 2013).
The use of encrypted data: encrypting the company’s data will ensure that it is not easy to decrypt it and get any sensitive data (Harris, 2017).
Eye on employees and use two-factor authentication: The company will make the employees understand the importance of not sharing private information with unauthorized personnel. There will also be strict rules and consequences against the sharing of confidential information. Two-Factor authentication is also critical for ensuring the safety of this information (Tyler, 2018).
Sign off policy. At the end of one’s shift, all company devices have to be handed over to the department. There would be no leaving the business premise with a company device (Tyler, 2018).
Ensuring the company against cybercrime. In case of any cybercrime attack, the company will have a policy that covers it. In the process of taking a system, the company reviews the type of attacks, thus adequately preparing themselves (Tyler, 2018).
Phishing emails. Opening of links sent to emails might redirect us to accounts that are meant to access private information. The best remedy would be to open the URLs in new web pages instead of clicking directly from our emails (Brandon, n.d.).
The security of the systems is the biggest threat to the business. If fully managed, the business has a chance of preventing itself from unnecessary losses from theft and lawsuits. The talent employed in the company will be best to provide us with the best cybersecurity services.
