Because of pollution, we find ourselves asking the question of whether this technology has helped our society more than it has hurt it. And now that we have identified the problem, how can it be fixed, and how will fix the problem of automobile pollution affect society also?
Pollution is becoming a big problem in today’s world. We are wrecking the earth day by day and automobiles are a very big part of that. As SUV’s get more and more popular, the pollution just increases. This world has become a very selfish place and people think only about themselves. They don’t care that we are ruining the earth and soon enough, this world will not be livable. But as long as the earth is fine for right now, no one really cares.
We like to put the blame on the business’ saying that it is their fault, but they make what we will buy. As long as the demand for SUV’s is so high, none of these car companies are gonna put much interest into the hybrid vehicles. It is up to the consumers to embrace this environmentally friendly way of living. Once the consumers allow change to take place and put the value of life over their own possessions, we will be able to make certain steps in cleaning up our planet.
III. Economic/Social Effects of Automobile Pollution
Automobiles can be blamed for the majority of air pollution easily. When looking at the top five contributors to air pollution, automobiles are responsible for three of them. The most important, being carbon monoxide is released from the exhaust along with many other pollutants and nothing is done about this. Sure, we have made stricter emissions for cars, but until something is done to totally change the automobile, we will have this same problem.
All of these automobile pollutants affect the environment in different ways. But one thing that they all have in common is that their effect on the environment is a negative one, which in turn affects humans in a negative way also. The most dangerous and widespread of all of the pollutants are hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbons emitted by automobiles create smog by reacting with nitrogen oxides and sunlight. This smog acts as ground-level ozone that causes many health problems for people. These problems include eye irritation, lung damage, and respiratory problems. Hydrocarbons can even cause cancer, which can lead to death.
Nitrogen oxides also play a part in the destruction of the ozone. Due to the high pressure in the automobile’s engine, nitrogen and oxygen atoms in the air react and form this nitrogen oxide. Along with deteriorating the ozone, nitrogen oxides also help form acid rain which hurts plants and other wildlife.
When incomplete combustion occurs because carbon is not completely oxidized to form carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide is formed. Carbon monoxide is very dangerous to human health. It reduces the flow of oxygen in the bloodstream and in turn, can be extremely dangerous to those people with heart disease. The carbon dioxide that is supposed to form in the combustion process also becomes a serious environmental problem in that it is a “greenhouse gas” that acts as a contributor to global warming.
All of these social problems, in turn, become economic problems. These problems need to be fixed, so there are many economic implications. More money spent on alternatives, the changing of lifestyles, consumer taste, and many others. Economics plays a bigger role than most think and can by directly responsible for the fixing of the problem. Economics makes this problem so hard to fix because of the problems it will create.
There is a lot that can be done to help eliminate the problems we face with automobiles. The idea of making emissions on cars stricter is just a short-term idea for fixing this problem. Until the automobile is totally revamped, this idea of reducing pollution will just be an idea.
The economic implications for these changes in automobiles make the process very hard, and very slow. It isn’t as easy as it looks. “Oh, just make better cars for the atmosphere and our problems will be solved.” It is very easy to look at these problems from the point of view of one person. A good solution would be the hybrid cars that we are seeing at the car dealerships. While they are not popular right now, they might become a necessity in the future. These cars cut down pollution by far and have many tricks that allow them to be so environmentally friendly. Most of the pollution associated with automobiles occurs when the car is idle. The chugging of the engine releases pollutants out of the exhaust into the atmosphere. With these hybrid cars, the engine is run by battery power while idle, which allows the car to run without dispersing all of the pollutants that the everyday automobile disperses.
Another form of solution would be the use of nuclear energy. Nuclear energy is much safer and much cleaner than using gas. In fifty years of so, we will run out of fossil fuels and something will have to be done. Automobiles will be useless unless an alternative for oil is found. Nuclear energy is looking like it will be the alternative, but it is hasn’t yet been harnessed. There are certain problems with nuclear energy, but compared to fossil fuels, it is much better. If nuclear energy is used there will be a lot less pollution and the problem with the automobile could be fixed. It is hard to say when all of this will happen, but as we get closer to having no more fossil fuels, the chance that something will happen becomes much greater.
The automobile is not a good case for the neutrality of technology. As one can see, the automobile has hurt our environment through its pollution and in turn, has hurt society. Does this technology not act as a burden on our society directly and indirectly? Can there ever be environmentally sound automobile? Maybe we are just wasting our time. Looking at the pollution problem, it is easy to say that automobiles are the biggest problem. This is a huge problem, and the answer is not going to be easy to find. Is the hybrid car the solution to our problem? For, if we construct more cars, we must construct more highways. More highways mean more rest stops and more development. This all in turn all results in more pollution, whether it is air pollution or simply noise pollution.
