Should vehicles (cars, trucks, vans, SUVs) be required to have backup cameras?
I chose this second question because it deals with safety, as well. There are vehicles and trucks which are mainly used for entrepreneurial purposes (Thomas & Jund, 2013). In this case, we have those that are used to transport expensive goods and at some point, anything such as a robbery may happen. For personal cars, carjacking may take place and backup cameras will be useful in case this incident moves to the court. Cases in court will easily be handled because of the ready evidence that makes it possible to get the individuals who caused the situations in question. This also gives a clear impression that cases involving vehicles will always be dealt with, within a short time, enabling other cases to be dealt with on time, as well. These are among the issues affecting individuals who are using vehicles and backup cameras can be very helpful in solving problems associated with them (Bhise, 2011).
Thesis Statement: Vehicles are required to have backup cameras so that in case of any serious incident, the file footages can be used where necessary.
Audience Characteristics
My audience for this topic includes stakeholders in the transport industry such as taxi operating companies, track companies, and individuals. The major characteristics of the audience for this topic are that they are all involved in the transport sector directly or indirectly. Whether transporting goods, passengers or driving personal cars; everyone is vulnerable to attacks, robberies, hijacking and other risks including accidents (Wentland, 2008). In addition, the audience has a choice to decide on the use of backup cameras. Despite this not being a recommendation, the audience is not restricted to installing backup cameras on their trucks or cars. The audience also has the decision making power as they can influence their legislators to adopt this requirement. This would ensure the safety of every person on the road.
The audience will also include government agencies who include officials in the transport sector and possibly, officials from the judiciary. Government officials from the transport sector are important because they play a part in ensuring that transport is safe and secure. The officials also face challenges from those who break traffic rules, and having cameras installed in cars will help them in capturing those who break traffic rules. The judiciary is also important because cases that involve breaking of traffic rules and robbery are handled by the judiciary (Thomas, 2012). Thus, it is important to bring in the judiciary so that it can also make recommendations on how this project will be implemented in the most efficient way while upholding individual rights.
Funding
This project will be helpful to everyone in the long run and thus, it requires joint funding especially from all the stakeholders. Individual vehicle and company owners will be required to install the cameras at their own cost. The government will facilitate this process by lowering the cost of the cameras so as to make them affordable to the vehicle owners. This will require subsidies on the cameras to make them affordable (Wentland, 2008). This will be applicable to existing vehicle owners. However, in the future, vehicle manufacturers will be required to install cameras in their vehicles as a qualification of selling their vehicles in the country. This will ensure that all vehicles are installed with the cameras and thus, compliant with regulations.
Project implementation
This project will be undertaken in two major phases. Currently, existing cars do not have cameras. This will mean that once the project is approved, vehicle owners will be required to install the cameras at their own cost. This ought to be done within two months of approval of the project. The second phase will be a government directive that all manufacturers pre-install cameras in their vehicles before putting them on sale (Thomas, 2012). This will take care of the future and work towards making it a culture to have cameras installed in vehicles. This will ensure that all cars on the road are installed with cameras for uniformity and conformity with the law.
Control
The project requires proper control to ensure accountability and so that it can be effective. The most effective way of handling the system is by having a centralized data backup system that will facilitate accountability. Having individual control systems can lead to tampering with the data and thus, lead to manipulation (Bhise, 2011). The rise in information technology knowledge has made it possible for people to control systems and manipulate them to their advantage. To ensure the effectiveness of this project, it will be necessary to have a standard camera technology with a centralized data backup so that the authorities can have credible information in case of an incident that would be solved using the footage.
Costs
This project does not involve a rise in the cost of transport. This is because the installation of the system will be done once and this means that there will be no regular costs involved (Wentland, 2008). The project will, therefore, lead to increased transport costs. The project will instead reduce the cost of handling cases in case of accidents because it will be easier to collect evidence based on the footage from the cameras. The project will also reduce insurance costs because transport will now be safer than before.
In conclusion, the transport sector has faced many challenges especially those involving security. These challenges can be overcome by installing cameras in vehicles so that all incidents are recorded. This reduces the time taken to solve cases in case of accidents because there is ready evidence for such cases. The implementation will be carried out jointly with all stakeholders and will not lead to additional transport costs. The project seeks to have a centralized data backup so as to minimize cases of tampering with data.
